DTS Digital Surround

DTS Digital Surround is the main competitor for Dolby in surround sound, however isn't as widely available. It uses less sound compression when the data is written to the disc, so the sound comes out at a higher quality. However, by doing this it does use more room on the disc.
This fact plus the fact that DTS is not a standard soundtrack format for DVD-Video makes DTS an optional 5.1-channel surround format that is actually available on few DVDs. There are far more DVD titles with Dolby Digital soundtracks than there are those with the DTS surround sound format.
